Honda ASIMO robot gains more humanoid capabilities
Madan | Dec 12 2007

Honda, which has been pursuing research and development of a truly useful humanoid robot, has debuted new version of ASIMO robot. This AISMO is equipped with more physical capabilities in which its improved running capability that has touched a decent 6km/hour from the previous 3km/hour is praiseworthy. In addition to that, it can run in a circular pattern at a high speed by tilting the center of gravity of its body inside of the circle. By doing so, it can maintain balance with the amount of centrifugal force experienced.

The other improvements include: It’s eligibility to perform tasks of a receptionist or information guide automatically with people. It does so through its visual sensors, floor surface sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and by an IC Tele-interaction. Further the communication Card, developed independently by Honda, allows the subject to communicate by holding the card. Camera in the head works as an eye, whereas with the force sensor on its wrists, ASIMO can give and receive an object such as a tray in a timely manner or hold a hand to move in coordination with humans.

A new battery charging station has also been developed to ensure ASIMO’s autonomous recharging. AISMO can itself identify the fall in battery below a certain level and can approach the charging station before it freezes at its position. If we remember, Honda is not alone in this quest of harnessing mechanical services. A few days ago, Toyota had done something similar with the presentation of its violin playing robot and wheelchair like robot, designed to provide personal transport over a short distance.
